What Are We About?
I am aware that we are not all on the blog yet, and that we are not all using it regularly, but I thought I'd bring this up anyway, since the next meeting is not until January and this is something that should have come up at the last meeting.
What are we [White Stag] about? What are we trying to teach to the candidates?

If you ask some people, we're a leadership development program. If you ask others, we're a fun place to spend a week during the summer. If you ask their parents, we're a place to ship the kids off for a week in August. If you ask me, we're somewhere between the first two.
What are we trying to teach the candidates? I don't know, but what I do know is what we do end up teaching them. Many people go away from the week with a sense of accomplishment (I know I did my first time- imagine me backpacking back then!). Some others go away disgruntled and unhappy with the experience, but that's their problem. I know that everyone goes home knowing the sessions, but one more major thing that I've learned throughout White Stag is how to work with many different types of people. You cannot help going to the week and expecting to find a personality that you've never encountered before.

I guess I'll give my input:
We give fundamental leadership skills, as well as social skills and the ability to work as both a leader and a follower. (We all have to follow at one point or another in our life) I also think we help the candidates to understand what it means to be a part of a group, and what a good environment for that should be like.
We're about leadership, but we're also about teaching the candidates what they can do when they really set themselves out to do something. It definitely builds a lot of confidence on the first backpacking trip and in cooking your own meals. Like Eric said, it's a sense of accomplishment.
I think we should also add the part that is fun about it. Those of us that have been to the week know how good it feels to go swimming after a long day of backpacking. We know the kind of experience you can get from things like the Iron Chef WS event. It's just amazing.
So yeah, I think it's a little bit of learning leadership and experience, a little bit of self-confidence and coming out of your shell and finding a way to enjoy yourself the entire time.
My Thoughts on Things we give people:
- A different perspective to view situations and their life with.
- Tools and methods to acomplish what they want.
- Mental and Spiritual Motivation.
